A draftsman and estimator in the manufacturing industry, who also volunteers with a local conservation group and native plant club, has been announced this week as the Greens candidate for Herbert.
Chris Evans was announced as the candidate by Senator Larissa Waters in Townsville on Tuesday, with a campaign focusing on cost of living, housing and healthcare.
“People in our community are hurting and struggling to get by. Grocery prices are skyrocketing, and rents and mortgages are out of control,” Mr Evans said.
“Health care is also a big concern, especially the lack of support for people struggling with mental health issues.
Running as a Greens candidate “due to the major parties failing to fix the problems”, Mr Evans said the party have a plan to tackle rising grocery prices by making supermarket price gouging illegal and breaking up the Woolies and Coles duopoly.
“We will help with housing stress by putting a cap on rent increases and delivering cheaper mortgages for people,” he said.
“We will make GP visits free and provide more support for people struggling with mental health issues by expanding Medicare to include mental health as well as dental care.”
Senator Larissa Waters, who is running for re-election to the Senate, said Mr Evans is a strong advocate for the community.
“Chris understands the pressures that the people of Herbert are facing and will be a representative who puts the interests of the community ahead of corporate interests,” she said.
“With this election likely to result in a hung parliament, we have a chance to deliver dental and mental health into Medicare and take strong action on the housing and climate crisis.”
