Many Townsville locals experienced a chilly start to the week, with the Bureau of Meteorology saying it was the coldest morning recorded in almost nine months across most of the state.
It was a cooler start for the city, recording a low of just 12.9C at 7:07am on Monday.
“It’s been a cold start across Queensland this morning, with much of the state recording it’s coldest morning since August or September 2023,” a spokesperson said.
The coldest recorded official temperature for North Queensland was recorded at Georgetown, which dropped to 5.9C at 4:38am on Monday morning. The low temperature was 10.7C below the May average minimum temperature of 16.6C.
“This is the fourth coldest May temperature at Georgetown Airport weather station in 20 years of data.”
Some who experienced a chilly morning at their house shared their recorded temperatures on the Townsville Bulletin’s Facebook page, with 9C recorded at Charters Towers and 10.2C at Alligator Creek.
One said it dropped to 9C in Bluewater and a Vincent resident said it got to 11.5C at their house.
Charters Towers recorded a low of 6.2C at 5:37am, according to BOM data.
Townsville is set to warm up for the rest of Monday with a top of 28 degrees and partly cloudy conditions, and a low of 15C and high of 29C for Tuesday.
