Northern Territory automotive apprentices and employers are set to benefit from a groundbreaking collaboration between Charles Darwin University TAFE (CDU) and the Motor Trade Association SA/NT (MTA).

The two organisations have signed an industry-first agreement to create an Automotive Training Industry Reference Group, designed to keep training programs in step with the rapid advancements reshaping the sector.

MTA CEO Darrell Jacobs highlighted the urgency of the initiative, citing the rapid shift towards electric and hybrid vehicles.

“One in five new cars sold in the NT is now a hybrid or EV,” he said.

“It’s vital that our workforce keeps pace.”

The reference group, made up of CDU, MTA, and industry representatives, will analyse trends and recommend strategies to ensure apprentices and skilled technicians are equipped for the future.

Key focus areas include the rise of electric vehicles, advanced driver assistance systems, and autonomous technology.

CDU TAFE Pro Vice Chancellor and CEO Michael Hamilton described the partnership as a game-changer.

“This collaboration strengthens the link between industry and education, ensuring training aligns with real-world demands,” he said.

“By addressing skills gaps, we’re supporting both small businesses and the wider community.”

With NT’s automotive sector facing critical workforce shortages, the initiative is expected to play a crucial role in shaping a highly skilled, adaptable workforce ready for the next generation of transport technology.
