A YOUNG Far North mum who held the hand of the victim of a fatal crash during her final moments has relived the shocking moment.
Chaise Boon, 18, of Cardwell, was the second car to pull over behind the 59-year-old Kuranda woman who died at the scene of a crash on the Bruce Hwy north of Cardwell on Wednesday.
“I wanted them (the family) to know that someone was next to her and someone held her hand and someone was with her.” she said.
“I stood next to her and held her arm as the ambulance came in.”
Ms Boon said she struggled in the moments she realised what had happened.
“I stopped for a minute or two – I was freaked out because I didn’t know how many people would be hurt,” she said.
“I sat then I rang the ambulance at 1.08pm and they asked me to go over and check for a pulse.
“I prepared myself to see bad things but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be, she just looked asleep.”
Ms Boon said there was a registered doctor who was in the car behind her and who started performing CPR.
“She tried for about 10-15mins while I was on the phone to ambulance, she checked for a pulse and there was no pulse,” she said.
“I stayed there until ambulance was there.”
“She was already dead when I got there and I got there a couple minutes after, so it looked like she didn’t suffer, she was sleeping, it didn’t look like she was in any pain.”
Ms Boon said she was proud of the community banding together.
“It wasn’t frantic, everyone was quiet and realised what had happened. Anyone that could help was helping,” she said.
“We tried to make it as comfortable as we could.”
But the experience was one Ms Boon said she will remember forever.
“I just feel sad for the family, she was probably someone’s mother or wife or grandma,” she said.
“It was scary to also think I could’ve left five minutes earlier and it could’ve been my daughter.
“It could have been a lot more people get hurt. I thought there was going to be more people in there.
