When faced with around 1000kg of bucking bull, a young Mareeba cowboy said keeping calm and focused on your breathing was key to not being thrown before the whistle.

Cowboy Wyatt Milgate, 21, said he’s training to be the first bullrider to make the magic eight seconds to win a qualified time aboard Pandemonium, which he likened to a whirlwind, at the 2022 Great Northern Bullriding Series Final next month.

Milgate, who last won the series in 2019, is currently in second place on 347 points behind Lane Mellers on 354 for the open title.

He said being able to hang onto Pandemonium will probably make or break his chances at the crown at the Atherton Showgrounds on November 5.

“Pandemonium is challenging, I rode him at Innisfail,” Milgate said,

“He’s really fast, he has a bucking style like a tornado the way he whips around.

“Every time I came off I felt really dizzy.”

Milgate said Pandemonium really lives up to his name.

“So you have to believe in yourself and try and keep calm,” he said.

“He’s a fast spinning bull, usually bulls either jump a straight line and turns up and that’s Pandemonium.

“He’s really in a class of his own.”

While Milgate plans to ride his best to take out the 2022 title, he’s also looking at making the transition to the highly competitive and lucrative US bullriding landscape.

He said he’s cramming as much training in as he can in between his job, which involved a lot of physical work,

“I recently finished my carpentry apprenticeship and I’m working for Shane Smith Builders in Mareeba,” he said.

“In between riding my owns bulls I go to the gym a lot and run.

“Hopefully I can qualify for the PBR finals at Townsville.”

Mareeba Rodeo Association president Peter Brown said Pandemonium will travel to the Atherton Finals from Clermont.

“Pandemonium has never had a qualified ride which must be a least eight seconds,” he said.

“A lot of great cowboys have tried to ride this bull including Wyatt Milgate who has had two attempts prior with no luck.

“He is a little fast spin bucking bull, he has a great nature and is a pure gentleman after he bucks all cowboys off and doesn’t really have a bad bone in his body – but man can he buck.”
