Far Northerners will today pause for a minute of silent reflection marking the end of WWI and remember those who fought and died for the nation in times of war.

The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month marks the anniversary of the Armistice that ended fighting with Germany in World War I.

Across the world, people rejoiced and celebrated the news, including in Australia.

Despite the late hour of the day, school, fire station, and church bells around the country rang, waking hundreds of people to share the news that war was over.

It’s a time to remember all who have given their lives in service, including in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

Cairns RSL sub-branch president Nathan Shingles said the Cairns service would begin at 10.40am at the Cenotaph on the Cairns Esplanade.

“Cairns has a large contingent of veterans and families of current and former members of our armed forces” he said.

“It’s important that they can take a moment out of their work day to be able to pay their respect to those who have served our country.”

Mr Shingles said more than 103,000 men and women have died during their service to our country and it was important for days like today mark their sacrifice.

“You don’t have to attend a service to pay your respects with a minute of silence,” he said.

“It can be on any day that you stop and think about those who are currently on deployment and what they do for their country, it’s important to keep them in mind.”

Poppies have become a powerful symbol of the loss of life that the conflict represented.

The red flowers will be pinned to lapels or laid upon headstones and memorials worldwide as a reminder of the artillery churned and trench lined battlefields of the western front which would bloom with the blood red petals echoing the bloodshed of the Great War.

Ceremonies will be held in Cairns, Kuranda, Gordonvale, Mareeba, Mossman, Innisfail, Herberton, Ravenshoe and Cardwell with the laying of wreaths, the playing of the Last Post, and the observance of a minute’s silence at 11am.
