His camp, on the banks of the Mitchell River about 2.5 hours from Mount Molloy, is set on 45,000ha of land.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances behind the death and that they would prepare a report for the coroner.

Karma Waters Station owner Alan Pedersen, who has been extensively involved in the search, said Mr Horne had lived a solitary life.

“Even though he is about 40km down the river I would drop in and see him now and again just to make sure he was still alright,” he said.

“You would see him on the road occasionally.

“He did keep to himself.”

His 1975 Land Rover was found 4km from his camp on Monday.
