Three children were rescued from a flooded Woree creek in Cairns

Three children calling out for help have been rescued by QFES Swift Water firefighters from a flooded creek in Cairns late on Friday afternoon.

Three children “calling out for help,” have been rescued from a rock in a flooded creek in Cairns later on Friday afternoon.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Swift Water technician Senior Firefighter Tom Neville said the children “were very glad to see us,” when the firefighters arrives at Gordon Creek near the intersection of Rigg and Windarra streets, Woree.

“They were sitting on a rock in the swollen creek,” he said.

“The youngest appeared to be about 10 and the other two were probably young teens.”

Senior Firefighter Neville said Gordon Creek was “very swollen with floodwater”.

Earlier, a Queensland Police Service spokesman said officers were at the incident.

“We were called by QFES at 5.20pm,” he said.

“We were told there were three person stuck in floodwaters and at least one is child who was yelling out for help.

“At 6.10pm the three people had been rescued and assessed by paramedics.”

The police spokesman said the three people appeared to be uninjured.

Earlier a Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said the incident was attended by specialist technicians.

“Three firefighter crews arrived around 5.30pm to reports of three people stock on rock in the middle of the creek,” she said.

Swift Water technicians are on the scene at the moment from South Cairns fire station.”

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said one ambulance with paramedics was at the scene, “with two more ambulances on the way.”

It is understood that none of the children needed to be transported.
