A Coles delivery truck has burst into flames on a suburban street in Cairns, forcing traffic to be diverted by police.
Authorities raced to the corner of Loridan Dr and Meston Cr in Brisnsmead about 3pm on Wednesday afternoon with a sedan parked nearby also catching fire.
Flames enveloped the front cabin but the driver luckily escaped, an eyewitness said.
“We heard a couple of explosions as we were driving,” the Brinsmead resident said.
“The driver was already out by the time we rounded the corner but it had obviously just caught fire.
“There was lots of smoke and it smelled like burning plastic and metal.”
A QPS spokesman confirmed police attended the scene alongside firefighters who quickly extinguished the blaze with the road re-opened to traffic soon after.
It is unknown the cause of the fire.
A Coles spokeswoman said the incident would be investigated further in the coming days.
“Thankfully, our team member who was driving the truck at the time is safe and we are currently working with Queensland emergency services,” the spokeswoman said.
“No further information as to the cause is known at this time.”
