A South Australian man on the run has been extradited to Adelaide on child exploitation charges after being arrested in Cairns.

Chad Douglas McMillan, 44, was stopped by police on October 31 on Lake St, Cairns city when officers discovered a hunting knife in his bag.

Follow-up investigations led the man’s arrest at a Trinity Park address at 7am last Tuesday, November 19.

The Adelaide man appeared briefly in the Cairns Magistrates Court last Wednesday where it was revealed he was wanted by South Australian police on one count of knowingly being in possession of child exploitation material and production of child exploitation material.

Police prosecutor Senior Sergeant Maynard Marcum said the man made full admissions about being wanted on the outstanding charges.

Magistrate Leanne Scoines convicted the man on the illegal possession of a knife in a public place charge but did not record a conviction.

She also signed off on the extradition to South Australia that’s expected to happen in the coming days when Adelaide police can arrive in Cairns to escort the prisoner south.

“The escorting officers are included within the draft order, and the draft order (outlines an) appearance before the Adelaide Magistrates Court on November 25 with respect to those charges,” Sergeant Marcum said.

There was no application for bail.

Outside the court Sergeant Marcum said the alleged offences date back to April and May of 2023.

“There’s one count of knowingly being in possession of it, and one count of producing the child exploitation material, which means he (allegedly) filmed it himself,” he said.

Sergeant Marcum said the arrest was a good result for the Cairns Child Protection Investigation Unit.

“They’re extremely effective at locating persons that are at large in other jurisdictions,” he said.

“And again, it just goes down to Detective Senior Sergeant Mick Gooiker’s leadership, he is one of the most switched on investigators that we have, he’s extremely capable and it’s not surprising they had all the material ready to go for this morning.”

The 44-year-old was flown to South Australia on Friday before having his matters heard before the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday.

Mr McMillan was remanded in custody to face court again in January.
