CAPE York woman Emma Jackson has been crowned one of eight Royal Flying Doctor Service regional local heroes for 2022 after her quick thinking saved the life of her friend.

Karryn Dolan and her husband Peter were visiting Emma Jackson at Wolverton Station, an hour away from the town of Coen, when Ms Dolan suffered a ‘widow-maker’ heart attack.

The quick-thinking Ms Jackson did not hesitate and began using the defibrillator machine on the property and performed CPR for an hour, ultimately saving Ms Dolan’s life.

Thanks to Ms Jackson’s bravery and spirit, Ms Dolan was able to be taken by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to Cairns Hospital, where she has since made a full recovery.

RFDS Queensland chief executive Meredith Staib congratulated Ms Jackson on her award, emphasising the importance of community and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

“Often local heroes within our communities are quiet achievers who don’t always recognise themselves as heroes — but they absolutely are,” she said.

“Supporting Queensland communities is at the heart of the RFDS, and it truly is a team effort, so thank you to all of this year’s winners and nominees for the unwavering support you provide to your communities each and every day.”

Ergon Energy Retail executive general manager Ayesha Razzaq said they are truly honoured to be able to support the dedication of the eight award winners.

“This is our seventh year as a proud partner of the awards, and each year I am both inspired and humbled by their efforts,” she said.
