BALACLAVA State School students have adorned the school fence with large poppies to mark Remembrance Day.
Year 5 student Javis Drummond, 10, said every class had written messages on the poppies for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
“Poppies are worn to show respect for the people that died and gave us a peaceful world,” he said.
Phoenix Gimini-Nona, 11, said “if the soldiers hadn’t gone to war and died, we wouldn’t be here in a safe place.
“When we hear the bugle play ‘The Last Post’ it’s important to stand up and stay quiet. During the minute’s silence, we take the time to remember and think about everyone who died or was injured during the wars to make sure our people and country are free,” he said.
Zane Ansen, 20, said displaying the poppies was a way to show students cared and remembered the soldiers.
Principal Cindy Freier said the school taught Australian history within world history and cultural contexts.
“Remembrance Day is a time to reflect, remember and celebrate the personal qualities of grit, courage, empathy, mateship and our duty to each other and our country,” Mrs Freier said.
Cairns RSL sub branch managing director Robin Lee also encouraged everyone to honour the moment of silence.
He is an army veteran who served for 16 years with deployments in East Timor, Iraq, Afghanistan and South East Asia.
“Much like other Australians, for me, it is a day to reflect on my time in the Army and those that have been before us,” he said.
“We observe the minute’s silence for people that have passed away in combat but I think it is equally important that we think of veterans right now, today, people my age and younger that are suffering injuries - psychological or physical – and need our help and support.”
