A terrified mother pretended to be asleep when she woke to find two young thieves in her bedroom while her toddler slept beside her.
Bentley Park’s Svitlana Mozghova said her two-year-old was asleep beside her when juveniles burgled her home on December 16.
She said she was terrified when she woke to find them in her bedroom so she pretended to remain asleep until they left.
What she woke up to was a bizarre shock – knife marks in the “front of the belly” of their inflatable Santa on the front lawn.
Her husband’s shoes and watch, car keys and a HP laptop were stolen.
But her expensive jewellery and Apple Macbook were left behind.
“My husband saw our (stolen) car driving around three times,” she said.
“We couldn’t do anything.”
It comes as alleged young thieves take to social media threatening to be Cairns’ own version of the “Grinch stealing Christmas”.
In a rant on Instagram, a Cairns juvenile wrote: “At the end of the day, I am the Grinch stealing Christmas motherf---er.”
A Queensland Police spokeswoman warned residents to be more security conscious as Christmas approached and “opportunistic thieves” sought out unwitting victims.
Officers recommend people lock security screens and doors and ensure windows and doors are locked every night before bed to stay vigilant.
“If heading off on holidays and leaving the car at home, pack the car keys and take them with you, or store them securely on your property,” the spokeswoman said.
“Let your neighbours know that you will be away so they can keep an eye out for any suspicious activity.”
