Police investigate reports of alleged Cairns Show assault

Emergency services have been called to an alleged violent incident at the Cairns Showground involving a show worker and a cricket bat.

EMERGENCY services have been called to an alleged violent incident at the Cairns Showground.

At 9.13am police and paramedics were called to the Severin St entrance of the showground in response to reports of a man allegedly being bashed with a cricket bat.

A police spokesman said officers at the showground were following up on reports and would begin an investigation.

“We have responded to reports of an assault,” he said.

“We are just waiting for ambos to arrive to assess the patient.

“We will follow up and confirm those reports.”

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman stated medics had been dispatched to assist the alleged assault victim.

“We received a call for someone with non-life threatening injuries,” he said.

“It’s been no lights and sirens, so that gives you an indication of how serious it is.

“(But) it looks like he will need to be taken to hospital.”

Following the final day of the Cairns Show on Friday operators at the Parramatta Park site are packing up rides and food caravans ahead of the Mossman Show set to kick off on Sunday.

Cairns Property Crime Squad charged four out of six people on 84 property related charges as part of Operation Dryandra at Cairns Show on Wednesday and Thursday in a largely incident-free event attended by an estimated 78,000 people.

“The Queensland Police Service is again proud to be part of the Cairns Show with officers conducting regular patrols,” a police spokesman said.

In 2019 a show worker was found unconscious at a Mareeba rodeo ground and later died in hospital after an alleged assault.
