A daughter has escaped an attempted murder-suicide by fleeing to neighbours for help after her father shot her in the leg at an isolated Far North property.

The woman aged in her 30s was shot by her father at a Bartle Frere address on Tuesday night.

He then took his own life.

More than a dozen police cars were spotted with lights and sirens on the Bruce Highway at about 7pm after officers received reports of an armed man at an isolated home.

Police and paramedics arrived at the scene about 7.30pm, where they found the man’s daughter in the car of neighbours, with a gunshot wound to her leg.

The man’s body was later found nearby.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said a report was being prepared for the coroner.

“A report will be prepared for the coroner following the non-suspicious death of a man during police operations last night, November 18,” she said.

“A woman, known to the man, was transported to Cairns Hospital with a non-life-threatening wound to the leg after allegedly being shot by the man at a Bartle Frere property around 7.25pm.”

The woman has since been discharged from Cairns Hospital.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed three crews had arrived at the Bartle Frere address.

“Around 7.30pm we were called to the address,” he said.

“We did assess a female in her 30s with minor leg injuries … I believe three teams were on the scene.”

Neighbours were contacted by the Cairns Post but declined to comment, with one resident saying it wasn’t “their story to tell.”

The incident follows a tragic Mount Sheridan murder-suicide that occurred in May this year.

Police were called to the Verbena Drive address for a welfare check when they found homeowners James and Krystel Paul dead.

A neighbour later told the Cairns Post the couples nine-year-old daughter was sent to their house by Mr Paul because, “mum was dead.”
