Travel website World Atlas has named the nine most charming small towns in Queensland – and the Far North has two of them.

While Palm Cove is more of a village than at small town, it made the list, along with Cardwell on the Cassowary Coast.

“Palm Cove is a quintessential Tropical North Queensland destination – this serene location is known as the spa capital of Australia, offering a harmonious blend of natural beaches and laid-back luxury,” it states.

It says Palm Cove is a haven for relaxation with boutique shopping on Williams Esplanade, an award-winning dining scene and day spas.

“The central area is lined with ancient melaleuca trees,” it says, adding that Palm Cove is a good fishing spot.

Cardwell made the list as it was a gateway to beautiful natural landscapes, with a drive through Cardwell State Forest to Attie Creek Falls, a perfect spot for a refreshing swim following a hike.

“Cardwell is close to Hinchinbrook National Park, with the Thorsborne Trail, a 32km trek renowned as one of the world’s greatest walks, and various fishing opportunities from beach, jetty, estuary, to reef and open sea,” it states.

Other towns that made the list were Bowen, Charters Towers, Childers, Julia Creek, Montville, Noosa and Tambo.

The website has Yungaburra among its six quirkiest towns in Queensland.

“The town’s crown jewel is the Curtain Fig Tree, an awe-inspiring natural formation that almost seems lifted from a fantasy novel,” it states.
