Optus and Telstra work in regional FNQ towns Mareeba, Atherton

Residents in a Far North town have been fed up about slow internet service for months. But one telco already has a solution and another has one on the way. This is what it means for you.

INTERNET providers are working towards better internet and mobile service amid calls for months from fed-up Mareeba residents who said Telstra service was unreliable.

Optus North Queensland general manager Dave Morrissey said better coverage in Mareeba is in place after their recent upgrades.

“We have good coverage in Mareeba and really fast download speeds because of the technology,” Mr Morrissey said.

“Optus has good coverage on the Tablelands, we have put a lot of new sites. We put the new site at Lake Tinaroo under the federal government black spots initiative.”

Mr Morrissey said the company has also put a site up in Dimbulah.

“These are locations where you can only get Optus mobile coverage,” he said.

Mr Morrissey said they have already made efforts to have a presence in regional towns.

“We did a business pop up at Mareeba but we also have an Optus retail store at Atherton square,” he said.

“If a local does have a concern, they can go to the local Optus retail store and address it face-to-face.”

Another Optus mobile tower on its way is a new one between Kuranda and Mareeba which is also expected to make a difference.

Telstra regional general manager Rachel Cliffe said Telstra had a number of projects in the pipeline to improve customers experience around the Tablelands.

“Our mobile base stations in Mareeba and Atherton are being upgraded and a new mobile base station in Tolga will also come online soon,” she said.

“These projects will deliver 5G to the region for the first time, bringing improved coverage, speed and capacity for customers in the area.

“We are also investigating further opportunities to expand our coverage in Mareeba South and Atherton.”
