AN innovative new school in the Far North unveiled their campus with various technologies including 3D printers on Wednesday.

Newman Catholic College, co-located with James Cook University at Smithfield is complete after a 12-month construction phase.

The school will be open to Year 7 students next year and will continue to add a new year level every year, with all grades up to 12 available in 2027.

Newman Catholic College principal Dr Lauretta Graham said her staff had been working on the new curriculum.

From Term 1, Year 7 students can choose elective subjects like visual arts, engineering, food technology and 3D design.

“We have chosen some of our electives to align with the strengths of James Cook University like marine studies and we are looking at electives in the area of health and things like that as well,” she said.

But Dr Graham said the school would have an innovative way of teaching.

“They will be working in project rooms, they will be working in teams, they will be working in a way where the teachers are learners as well,” she said.

Having JCU on the same campus will also give some other opportunities to students.

“On our campus here in Cairns we have something called the eduQuarium, we have animals, we have labs we have other facilities and a broad range of other facilities that I can see potentially being open to students,” JCU Vice Chancellor professor Sandra Harding said

“A lot of that detail of course has to be worked out.”

The school has a four-level building that includes five design technology classrooms, four science lab classrooms, a library, administration area, and an indoor PE court.

The school has reached its limit with 140 students enrolled and more on the waitlist.
