After lengthy delays, a new gelato joint is at last serving freshly made summer delights including a signature dragon fruit sorbet and Ferrero Rocher gelato.
Gelocchio at Cairns North is now trading in an expansion of the Aplin St family-run business.
Ongoing building work at the new 375 Sheridan Street outlet had caused major dust problems that meant the opening of the bigger and better shop, including a large commercial kitchen, had been on hold for months.
Earlier this month the new store opened almost in time to coincide with a 12-year anniversary of the opening of the original Gelocchio hole-in-the-wall, celebrated on February 9.
Gelato maker and store manager Andrew Pospisil said it was exciting to at last have the second shop open.
“Here we have a bigger kitchen than on Aplin St, it’s very small, tiny,” he said.
“For us the kitchen was the most important thing, more than the shop.
“We are making gelato for both shops here and the plan is to supply restaurants.”
The hugely popular Gelocchio was founded by Renzo and Valeria Luisetto in 2011 and has developed a strong following of devoted customers.
The family-owned ice creamery blends Italian tradition with fresh Far Northern produce
and was voted Australia’s best dessert spot on popular travel website TripAdvisor and consistently places in the nation’s top three ice cream parlours.
The secret to the family’s success is the locally sourced products which flavour their ice-creams according to co-owner Ollie Luisetto.
