The Northern Beaches will have a shiny new community hall inside of 12 months, replacing a building a local councillor has said was “literally loved to death”.
On Wednesday Cairns Regional Council confirmed the project would be awarded to Cairns-based contractor MyBuild Solutions, with an approved $1.8m budget and an April 2024 end date.
The council secured 50 per cent of the project’s funds from the state government during regional parliament, which Division 9 councillor Brett Olds said allowed the project to go ahead.
“There’s been an intent to replace the hall for a while now. All of our council assets are closely watched year on year, and it was decided a while ago that this hall would require being taken down and having a brand new one built in the same spot,” Mr Olds said.
“The main hurdle for us though has been the cost to complete.
“The state government came on board with a $935,000 grant … which allowed this vital project to actually get off the page and start to happen.
“Today we awarded the contract for this to get underway and while we don’t have an actual start date just yet, I’ll be letting everyone know as soon as we find out.”
The report put before councillors at their Wednesday ordinary meeting outlined MyBuild Solutions as “the highest scoring tender”.
“This tender is considered to offer the best value for money to council and suitably meets the requirements of the evaluation criteria with relevant experience, management systems, understanding of the project as well as local staff and use of local subcontractors,” the report stated.
The report also stated the layout and structure of the existing hall was no longer fit for purpose.
“It is proposed to demolish the existing facility and construct a new community activity
space at the same location in Coastwatcher Park, Trinity Beach,” it stated.
“The project objective is to provide a fit for purpose community activity space that allows
local community groups to provide safe, enjoyable activities and programs, which
includes formal and accessible spaces that support community development, encourage community interaction, and enable the delivery of local community focused programs and
activities.”
Mr Olds said the hall’s new design would be standard for community halls throughout the region moving forward.
“Community groups can’t wait to see the final outcome here,” he said.
“Extra storage, dual rooms for different meetings to run concurrently, direct access to the park and other goodies means that more groups will be able to use this space and enjoy an extremely valued piece of infrastructure.”
