NAPLAN data showing students falling behind 'not news to teachers'

A NUMBER of Cairns schools has topped the charts and ranked high in NAPLAN results for Queensland despite the disruptions of Covid and remote learning.

A News Corp analysis from the state’s popular schools revealed Trinity Anglican School (TAS) as the top achieving school for secondary with St Monica’s College and St Augustine’s College close behind.

Aloomba State School topped the primary school results in Cairns with Yorkeys Knob State School and TAS also ranking high.

TAS principal Paul Sjogren said it was a great result even in a difficult time.

“It is a testament to the teachers and parents across the country that despite extended periods of remote learning, school closures and other disruptions, that students still performed well year on year,” Mr Sjogren said.

“NAPLAN scores are just one piece of the puzzle, there are many other important factors that enable a school to benchmark their performance and drill down on areas of improvement.

“Despite our fantastic scores, we will use this data to further refine our teaching and learning program and improve learning outcomes.”

St Monica’s assistant principal curriculum Larissa Nolan said they had a diverse range of students at the school.

“We have students with special learning support needs, we have a high percentage of students with hearing-impaired, we have a variety of students from a variety of backgrounds and learning abilities,” Ms Nolan said.

Last year the NAPLAN test was completed online and Ms Nolan said that was a positive.

“We went into the NAPLAN online format for the first time last year. It’s an adaptive test, it becomes harder or easier based how students are performing,” she said.

“All girls at the school participate. One thing about the online version is because they are an adaptive test, the diverse range of students can have tests that are geared towards them.

“It also extends the high achieving a bit more which is great,” she said.

St Andrew’s Catholic College principal Sean Mangan said it was an important part of the overall curriculum.

“A parent can look at the overall progress of a child and look at where the child is sitting compared to the national average,” Mr Mangan said.

“We look at our data and compare to where we are in the state.”

Mr Mangan said he was happy to see the results.

“We are very pleased to be ranked so highly and not only within Cairns but across Queensland,” he said.
