A Cairns legal team investigating claims of historic abuse at a private boys’ school is seeking to contact witnesses in relation to incidents that allegedly occurred at the college across two separate decades.
Shine Lawyers has issued a “witness callout”, requesting that students or employees who attended St Augustine’s College, Cairns in the late-1980s to the mid-1990s contact their firm.
The inquiry relates to a client’s claims based on their experiences at the school during that time, Special Counsel Nina Edwards, said.
“We’re hoping witnesses will get in touch and help us understand elements of the school’s culture,” Ms Edwards said.
“Our client has suffered horrendous abuse during their time at the school, which has had a profoundly detrimental impact on their life.”
Since posting an alert on social media recently, the firm has spoken to several people previously affiliated with the school, Ms Edwards said.
“We have been inundated with calls so far, all of which have been incredibly helpful,” she said.
“I’d like to thank everybody who’s contacted us for assisting our investigation, and implore anybody who was at the school at the time to please get in touch.
“I have little doubt there are other victim-survivors out there. I would reiterate to them that when they feel the time is right to seek justice of their own, they will be heard and they will be believed.”
Catholic Education Diocese of Cairns executive director Bill Dixon said he was aware of the investigation and would be offering support to school staff and students.
“We will assist with investigations of the claims of alleged historic abuse from almost 40 years ago and support will be offered to all members of the school community, if required,” Mr Dixon said.
“Student protection and the wellbeing of students and staff is always our highest priority.”
