They were still on scene about 7am.

A Queensland police spokesman said it would be several hours before the highway reopened, following “the most serious of crashes.”

Cairns woman Stephanie Jeffrey was on her way to O'Brien's Creek Campground at Mount Surprise for a long weekend getaway with the crash brining her road trip to a halt just after 6am.

“The police told us that there had been a fatal and that we were all best off to turn around and come back later because it could be several hours before the road opens again,” Ms Jeffrey said.

At 8am she said there were a number of vehicles destined for the west, then parked at Innot Hot Springs, as they waited for the highway to reopen.

“The guy behind us had a 10-hour trip ahead of him and many others who were heading to and past Karumba.”

The stretch of highway at Innot Hot Springs has been the site of numerous serious crashes in recent years, including a semi-trailer rollover at the Reinecker Rd intersection that left a driver with head injuries last month.
