A Gordonvale mother sent more than 10,000 messages and made more than 2000 calls to her ex partner in the months after a break-up, a court has been told.
Chloe May Jean Sherman, 36, pleaded guilty in Cairns District Court to nine charges, including two counts of stalking and wilful damage, aggravated by being domestic violence offences, and supplying drugs between October last year and January 2025.
Judge Anthony Rafter SC sentenced Sherman to two and a half years prison with an immediate parole release date, taking into account her remorse, guilty plea and the time she had already spent in custody – 162 days.
Sherman told the judge she was “very remorseful and regret everything I’ve done”, with her victims’ statements expressing difficulty at putting the effects of her crimes on them into words.
Sherman and the victim had been in relationship for close to 20 years and had four children together, the court was told
Crown Prosecutor Kurt McDonald said the stalking started after their relationship broke down, describing her behaviour as “coercive and controlling”.
He said Sherman sent 10,639 messages and made 1827 calls to her ex-partner, left comments on his TikTok account, slashed his tyres and verbally abused him outside a city hotel one night, yelling insults at him like “piece of s*** loser”.
Sherman also left 888 messages and made 1466 calls made to her ex-partner’s 72-year-old mother, making her feel “extremely uncomfortable”.
“It was somewhat of a long and tumultuous relationship that broke down after 19 years … the stalking involved a tsunami of correspondence,” Mr McDonald said.
He said the victims described extreme stress and anxiety from the calls, with her ex-partner saying it caused him to “second guess” everything he did.
“It’s hard to explain the effect it’s had on me … she knew exactly what to say to hurt me most,” the statement said.
Defence Barrister Rachelle Logan said Sherman had the support of her family, and understood she could not contact her ex-partner again, and would be organising any necessary family arrangements through a lawyer in future.
Mr McDonald said the drug offences related to Sherman supplying her legally-acquired medical cannabis to a friend several times, a crime that was discovered when the police seized her phone after she was arrested.
