THE son of 66-year-old Innisfail man Kalman Tal has established a public fundraiser following his “gentle” father’s grisly death.

Filip Tal has launched a GoFundMe fundraiser, in a bid to raise $13,000, following the death of his father on February 19.

On Thursday, the campaign was just shy of $3000, with eight donors contributing.

Although the fundraiser does not state how the money would be spent, it was categorised into the site’s Funerals and Memorials section.

“My father Kalman Tal was known as a sweet, kind, gentle man who would do anything for anyone,” Filip Tal’s statement read.
“His life was cut short and (he) will not get the chance to see his grandchildren grow up. Our lives are changed forever. Any donations will be gratefully received.”

Mr Tal died in the early hours of February 19 when his body was discovered on the footpath at Innisfail’s Fitzgerald Esplanade, outside a fish and chip shop.

Police confirmed Mr Tal’s leg had been severed from his body when emergency services arrived just before 5am, February 19.

The same day, police had taken Vanuatuan John Yalu into custody, before charging the farm worker with murder. Mr Yalu’s matter was mentioned at Innisfail Magistrates Court on February 21, with his matter set for another mention on June 6, while he was remanded in custody.

Detective Acting Inspector Gary Hunter said police would allege Mr Tal paid $5000 to have his leg amputated by Mr Yalu.

It can be revealed police are investigating whether Mr Tal asked Mr Yalu to sever his leg because he was suffering from a painful foot ailment.
