Future Cairns liveability: Why people choose to live in Cairns and the Far North

It is important to not lose what it is people love about Cairns while it grows from lack of traffic to a laid-back lifestyle. Why do you live in Cairns?

While Cairns grows, policy makers recognise the importance of maintaining the character of a laid-back regional centre without the traffic headaches of big cities.

Gary Owens, of Edge Hill, enjoys the active lifestyle Cairns offers in his spare time. Moving here from Melbourne almost 25 years ago, there are a few qualities that kept him here.

“It is a lot more laid-back with no traffic like you get in Melbourne,” he said.

“I think everybody is a bit more relaxed.”

Mr Owens said the beauty of Cairns as well as the weather was a huge drawcard.

Cairns Deputy Mayor Terry James said the city was becoming an increasingly popular choice by many around Australia.

“(There is) a lack of congestion and traffic compared to big cities,” he said.

“With remote working a real possibility in many organisations, it is now easier than ever to leave the major cities behind for a sea change, a better work-life balance and more affordable housing.”

Cr James said there were a few steps the council can take to make the region a liveable place.

“Pivotal to retaining locals and encouraging people to move to Cairns is providing sustainable career and employment opportunities, to complement the tropical lifestyle,” he said.

“Council endorsed its Economic Development Strategy 2022-2026 in November 2021 which looks to build Cairns into a $13 billion per annum economy and create thousands of new jobs, as well as elevating the city as a leader in the smart green economy.”

Cr James said the key policy areas the council was looking at building upon were connected to liveability.

“Priority industries and sectors such as aviation, healthcare, defence and tourism are among areas identified to foster continued economic growth in the Economic Development Strategy 2022-2026,” he said.

“Along with the recognition of key geographic areas of focus, including the City Centre, FNQ Health and Innovation Precinct and Portsmith Marine Precinct.”
