The Far North Major and Organised Crime Squad has shut down the cocaine and cannabis distribution ring following suburban raids on four Cairns properties and the seizure of dangerous drugs.

In collaboration with the Cairns Criminal Investigation Branch and Tactical Crime Squad the Organised Crime Squad executed search warrants on houses in Kewarra Beach, Smithfield, Mount Peter and Mount Sheridan on April 11.

The crackdown was run under the umbrella of Operation Whiskey Sindel which was set-up in December 2024 to target cocaine trafficking in the Cairns area.

During the searches, officers seized cocaine, cannabis and cash along with drug utensils and electronic devices.

Police alleged three men aged between 41 and 64 were involved in trafficking cocaine in the Cairns area in recent months.

During the raid on the Kewarra Beach property police allege a 64-year-old man tried to avoid arrest and absconded from officers while holding up to an ounce of cocaine in his hand.

Officer in charge of the Major and Organised Crime Squad Far Northern, Detective Senior Sergeant Brad Grace said police will keep the pressure on and target the distribution of dangerous drugs within the greater Cairns area.

“These substances pose a significant risk to the community, and we will continue to run operations like this one to target offenders,” Detective Senior Sergeant Grace said.

“Anyone who has information about the distribution of illegal drugs is urged to report it to police, to help us keep our community safe.”
