A frantic air, water and land search for a missing 27-year-old in the Barron River has ended in tragedy despite early optimism that the Aeroglen man would be found alive.

Police closed down the operation on Friday after discovering the man’s body.

“Dive squad officers located the body of a man, believed to be the missing 27-year-old in the Barron River,” a police spokesman said.

“Preliminary information suggest the death is non-suspicious and police will prepare a report for the coroner.”

The search involved use of the Rescue 510 helicopter as well as the dog squad, drones, police divers and officers on foot, who co-ordinated to find the man who went missing in the vicinity of the Barron River at Kamerunga on Thursday.

The man was last seen on Wednesday, July 19.

Investigations indicated he was in the vicinity of the Barron River which is where police focused their search efforts, which commenced at 6am on Friday from the search command centre on Lower Freshwater Rd, SES Far Northern region area controller Matt Currey said.

Search crews held out hope; one SES member said on Friday the search remained a rescue operation and not a recovery mission.

At 6.48am on Friday the QGAir Rescue 510 helicopter spent an hour scouring the banks of Barron River between the Captain Cook Highway and the Kamerunga Rd bridge, but returned to base without locating the missing man.

Police and the man’s family held concerns for the 27-year-old’s welfare as he had a medical condition and his disappearance was out of character.
