A BIG line-up of teams will step out in the fight against cancer to walk the walk for Relay for Life.
Far North Queensland Relay for Life logistics co-ordinator Christina French said it will be the second year the event finishes at 11pm instead of going through the night – a change which proved popular with participants.
This year there will be about 55 teams, with 20 of them from schools.
“Last year we dropped it back to a nine-hour event because of Covid and the extra planning that had to go into the Covid safe plans,” she said.
“We got a positive feedback on that because a lot more schools were happy to participate.
“The relay will begin with a survivors and carers lap to celebrate their cancer journeys.
“There’s normally 10 to 15 people per team but then also the teams are registered, friends and family come along for certain parts of the relay so we are expecting a few hundred people.
“We have live entertainment from people who are donating their time at Barlow Park.”
Ms French said the cause was close to many people’s hearts, including her own, after she lost her mother in 2001 to cancer.
The opening ceremony will begin at 2pm, followed by a survivors and carers afternoon tea at 2.30pm and a candlelight ceremony at 7pm.
The event will be at Barlow Park on Saturday July 30. People can register at relayforlife.org.au/event/far-north-qld-2022
