Livestock swept away by raging flood waters have been found tangled in trees and scattered across the banks of the Barron River.

A number of cows drowned by record flooing were pulled from the banks under William Walter Mason Bridge along the recently reopened Captain Cook Highway on Wednesday.

More were seen by commuters pushed against storm culverts just past the bridge, decaying in the sun.

Tablelands farmer Tom Howe showed the extent of the loss in an online video in which he estimated about 40 dead cows were stuck in trees along the bank at the bottom of Barron River.

“Look at them all in there … there’s so many,” a man in the video says.

A few fortunate animals were saved during the floods by good Samaritans with one rescue being captured on tape.

On social media, cattle farmers gave their thanks to the community for their help in locating surviving cattle in the wake of the floods.
