MAVERICK Member for Kennedy Bob Katter has released a video depicting him shooting two men just days after 49 people were gunned down in a mass shooting in the US.
The bizarre video, which features the grinning MP holding a smoking gun, has received bipartisan condemnation, been labelled disgusting and offensive, and sparked calls for his resignation.
But Mr Katter was unrepentant last night, declaring the outrage against him as coming from the “Spanish Inquisition politically correctness society”.
The controversy comes as the veteran MP fights to retain his seat after a 17 per cent swing against him in 2013, leaving it the second most marginal seat in regional Queensland.
The ad features two men, one wearing an LNP shirt, the other a Labor one, putting up a sign stating “Australia for sale”.
It then shows Mr Katter painting the word “not” on the sign, before cutting to him holding a smoking six-shooter.
The camera then pulls back to reveal the first two men lying “dead” on the ground. The video was released in the aftermath of the Orlando massacre, in which a gunman murdered 49 people and left dozens more wounded at the Pulse nightclub and gay bar.
LNP candidate for Kennedy Jonathan Pavetto, who is openly gay, said the video was in poor taste coming on the back of the “worst mass shooting in America’s history”.
“It’s promoting violence against people who don’t share his views,” Mr Pavetto said.
“Gun owners in north Queensland are responsible and for Bob Katter to be running around like it’s the Wild West is a gross mischaracterisation.”
Labor’s Kennedy candidate Norman Jacobsen said it was insensitive, “absolutely disgusting” and demanded an apology.
“He thinks it’s funny, but let me tell you there’s no one from my side or the LNP laughing,” he said.
LNP Senator Barry O’Sullivan said Mr Katter was a “coward” and should stand down.
“In the shadow of the events in Orlando, this is the most atrocious and bizarre political ad that I have ever seen,” he said.
In a statement, Mr Katter did not address the Orlando shooting, but declared most people would find the ad funny.
“We Australians still have our sense of humour in spite of the Spanish Inquisition politically correctness society ... but what is not funny is the selling off of this country,” Mr Katter said.
