Emergency services respond to car fire on English St, Manunda
Multiple calls alerted firefighters to an explosive car fire spewing thick smoke in a Cairns inner suburb.

A car fire at Manunda sparked multiple witness calls to emergency services as explosions and thick black smoke bellowed from a small hatchback.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said firefighters were alerted to the scene at English St by multiple 000 calls at 8.40am this morning.
“Multiple callers advised that they could see thick black smoke and could hear explosions from the vehicle,” she said.
“When crews arrived the car was well enveloped and there was a lot of smoke.”
A single crew was able to extinguish the fire by 9.10am.
“One pump responded to the scene who were able to extinguish the fire and the scene was handed over to police for further investigations.”
A QPS spokeswoman confirmed that a white Mitsubishi Mirage had caught fire on English St with police closing the road at Hoare and Birch Streets.
“We have no indication that this was a stolen vehicle at this time, she said.
After the fire was extinguished the car was towed from the scene at around 10.30am.
A police officer at the scene described the smoke when they arrived.
“The smoke was quite thick and it was hard to breath,” she said.
