Dramatic footage has been released by authorities showing the moment quick-thinking truck drivers helped Queensland Police intercept an allegedly stolen vehicle in Cairns. The truckies blocked the vehicle’s path, enabling police to swiftly apprehend the teenage driver and take him into custody.
Trenton Shane Lochlan Ludwick, 18, from Bentley Park, is alleged to have gained access to a Grafton Street property on January 18, before allegedly stealing personal items and a car.
Police alleged the man broke into the home and took a gold 2023 Mazda CX5 G25 Touring, sometime between 11pm on Friday night and 6am Saturday January 19.
Cops had been called to Mulgrave Road, Westcourt about 9.30am on Saturday, following reports of a vehicle driving suspiciously.
However, upon arrival, police said the stolen SUV allegedly attempted to evade police.
At 10.45am, the car was finally brought to a stop by police and nearby truck drivers on Airport Ave.
On Monday, January 20, Detective Inspector Cindy Searle from Queensland Police said the SUV was being driven dangerously and confirmed members of the public assisted police.
“Motorists who were in large vehicles had observed what was going on and assisted police with stopping the vehicle and were able to safely apprehend the man,” she said.
“What we find is some members of the community are very astute at observing what’s going on, and it may well be that they’ve observed what was happening with the vehicle”
“Because they were in larger vehicles, they were able to assist police in blocking the road and preventing the stolen vehicle from continuing.”
A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the Mazda was tracked by helicopters and two trucks had assisted by blocking the road.
“The Mazda CX5 was tracked to Airport Ave where two trucks and police blocked the vehicle in,” she said.
It is further alleged Mr Ludwick drove the vehicle dangerously throughout Cairns and stole fuel at a nearby business.
He is also suspected of additional break and enter and vehicle thefts at a separate Grafton Street address on January 10.
Mr Ludwick was taken into custody and charged with two counts each of enter dwelling and commit, receiving tainted property, unlawful use of motor vehicle and unlicensed driving, and one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and stealing.
Police bail was refused and he was scheduled to appear before the Cairns Magistrates Court Monday, January 20.
With no bail application made on Monday, Mr Ludwick remains in police custody after the matter was adjourned.
In addition a 17-year-old boy was also charged with ten offences in relation to the incident.
They included two counts of stealing, two counts of entering a dwelling and commit an indictable offence, two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle in the night in company and one count each of attempted enter dwelling with intent by break at night and attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle.
His bail was refused and he appeared before the Cairns Children’s Court on Monday where his Defence counsel Jaci Boughton made a bail application.
Ms Boughton told the court the boy was easily led by other people.
She also said he had been cooperative with police making “full and frank admissions”.
Police prosecutor Taylor Reedy revealed the boy had a 14 page juvenile history.
She told the court, among the alleged offending, the pair had allegedly broken into a woman’s home before they were chased off by the occupant who saw them in her kitchen from her balcony.
The pair allegedly left with the occupant’s phone, hand bag and a watch.
Mr Lodziak said there was concern about the boy’s ability to self-regulate.
“His behaviour is partly explained by him being easily influenced,” he said.
“He was also frank in discussing drug use being a problem for him.”
The court heard the boy had a NDIS program available for him before he moved to Cairns but his support services had not been transferred to Cairns.
Mr Lodziak said the boy appeared as someone who wanted to do the “right thing” and realised the change he wants to make in his life and accepted that there was a possibility that upon sentencing the boy may not be given a custodial sentence.
The boy’s bail application was approved and he was placed on a conditional bail program.
The boy entered pleas of guilty to nine of ten charges with his matters adjourned until February for a pre-sentence report to be completed.
The incident sparked hundreds of comments on social media with video of the incident posted online on Saturday.
Authorities are appealing to anyone with information, or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage of the vehicle to come forward.
