DON’T get those raincoats out just yet because despite the dark clouds Cairns can expect a mostly fine few days of weather with above average temperatures all week.
Cairns is expected to reach a top of 29C this week which is close to three degrees higher than the average temperature in August for the region.
The Bureau of Meteorology forecasts the minimum temperature is expected to remain slightly above average with a low of 19-20C.
Meteorologist Livio Regano said the above average temperatures were due to a wind change.
“The average for Cairns midwinter is around 26 degrees so getting these above average temperatures is not that unusual it just means that there is a slight shift in the wind in favour of warmer weather,” he said.
Although the clouds outside indicate incoming rainfall, Cairns can expect just a modest chance of any showers the rest of this week.
Mr Regano said no significant rainfall is expected over the next week.
“We won’t get any significant rain this week, we may get mostly small drizzly stuff enough to make the day seem rotten but no significant rain,” he said
“It’s going to be just party cloudy making it look like it is going to rain but it most likely won’t.”
The rest of the week is forecast to be partly cloudy with a top of 28C on Tuesday and Wednesday, and maximum of 29C on Thursday and Friday.
Wind conditions will remain consistent for the remainder of the week with speeds of 15-25 knots.
Humidity is also going to be above average for the week with Mr Regano explaining it will be felt most at night.
“Because of the southeast wind that we have, it will be a more humid air mass than normal that’s there reason why we are getting slight drizzle and partly cloudy conditions,” he said.
“The nights will be most affected with above average temperatures due to the humidity.”
