A second saltwater crocodile has been spotted overnight, near where a 45kg labrador was attacked and killed by a reptile on Wednesday.

A Department of Environment and Science spokesman said contractors did a spotlight survey of the Barron River in the Kamerunga area overnight on Wednesday.

“They confirmed the presence of another estuarine crocodile in the area, and it will be targeted for removal,” the spokesman said.

“They were unable to determine the size of the animal.”

It comes after Cairns woman Alia Baxter was left devastated after her beloved dog Indie was snatched off the bank by a crocodile by the lower Kamerunga Foot Bridge, around a metre from the water’s edge, on Wednesday.

Ms Baxter’s father Alan Benn said he used the area regularly and expressed great fear for the upcoming summer holidays.

“It’s just a matter of time before a real tragedy occurs and a young child goes missing,” he said.

On Wednesday, the DES confirmed its crocodile contractors captured a 2.4m crocodile in a trap placed at Kamerunga near where Indie was reported to have been taken.

The spokesman said people were advised to stay away from the area to maximise the possibility of any crocodiles present in the river being observed.

“The crocodile will be rehomed in a farm or zoo,” he said.

Report all croc sightings to DES via the QWildlife app or by calling 1300 130 372.
