Police have declared a crime scene after a fire damaged a unit in an apartment complex rendering it uninhabitable.
A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said they were called to the fire at Digger Street, Cairns North on the second floor balcony about 2.20pm.
Three fire trucks extinguished the fire and nobody was injured or inside.
Cairns Fire Station Officer Tim Caswell said the cause is still unknown but police were investigating.
“Most of the damage has been contained to the veranda with a small amount of internal damage, however given there has been some electrical infrastructure damage, I expect the place might be uninhabitable for a while,” he said.
Most of the damage was from the actual fire and some general smoke damage, Mr Caswell said.
But the cause of the fire is still unknown.
“We know it started on the veranda but that’s about all we can determine at this stage,” he said.
