Helicopter vision

Multiple agencies have joined forces to track down and arrest five youths alleged to be involved in the theft of a Mazda CX-3 station wagon.

Police have released dramatic footage, including a bird’s eye view of the action from the QGAir Helicopter that led to the arrest of the youths on Thursday afternoon.

Units including officers from the Property Crime Squad, Tactical Crime Squad, First Responders, Child Protection Investigation Unit and QGAir Helicopter with a Police Spotter on-board came together to nab offenders on Scott St, Bungalow.

“Special thanks go out to the multiple community members who called Policelink and provided valuable information to police in a timely manner and another who was injured after confronting the group,” a police spokesman said.

THURSDAY’S NEWS

Suspected car theft

UPDATE FRIDAY, JUNE 24: Police have charged five teenage boys after a member of the public confronted them in a stolen vehicle in Cairns on Thursday.

It will be alleged on Wednesday, June 22 a Mazda CX-3 station wagon was stolen from a Cairns North address.

About 3.40pm on Thursday, police received a report that the vehicle had been sighted stopped in a line of stationary traffic on Scott Street at Bungalow.

It will be further alleged that two members of the public attempted to remove the occupants from the stolen vehicle, and that a scuffle occurred before all five juveniles fled the scene.

Police arrived on scene a short time later and with information from members of the public took all five juveniles into custody.

A 17-year-old Westcourt boy has been charged with ten counts of stealing, five counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, four counts of unlicensed driving and one count each of possession of a knife in a public place, fraud and burglary.

A 15-year-old Bentley Park boy has been charged with three counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count each of unlicensed driving and stealing.

Both will appear in the Cairns Childrens Court today.

A 15-year-old Edmonton boy has been charged with six counts each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and burglary, two counts of unlicensed driving and one count of stealing.

A 16-year-old Edmonton boy has been charged with four counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count each of burglary, assault, receiving tainted property and stealing.

Both will appear in the Cairns Childrens Court on June 29.

A 16-year-old Gordonvale boy will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act for one count of unlawful use or a motor vehicle.

UPDATE 6.10PM: Police have found all five alleged offenders of a suspected vehicle theft in Bungalow.

A vehicle was reported to police to be “driving erratically” on Buchan Rd at 3.30pm this afternoon.

A member of the public moved their car to block the vehicle, halting it in the middle of the road.

The member of the public then tried to make a citizen’s arrest of at least one of the vehicle’s occupants, but was unsuccessful and all suspects fled the scene.

Five alleged offenders were brought into police custody by 5.30pm.

Police have declared a crime scene and are continuing their investigation.

Queensland Ambulance Service transported the member of the public to Cairns Hospital to treat a small cut to that person’s finger. The member of the public was in a “very stable” condition but may require stitches to the finger.

EARLIER 4.30PM: Multiple offenders are being searched by police in Cairns after a stolen vehicle was found parked in the middle of a road.

Queensland Police have attended a scene at Buchan St, Bungalow where there are a number of suspects believed to have fled from the stolen vehicle.

Two people have been in custody since 3.40pm with a helicopter in the area to assist with the search of other offenders.

Queensland Ambulance are on scene treating a patient with a small laceration to their finger.

WEDNESDAY’S NEWS

Emergency services were called to the scene of a vehicle rollover at 9.50am on Wednesday.

A Queensland Ambulance representative said one road crew assessed the incident on the Kennedy Hwy near Smithfield on the Macalister Range.

“Paramedics assessed a single patient,” she said.

“He was later transported to Cairns Hospital in a stable condition.”

It is understood that the person has not suffered any serious injuries.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services representative said one crew had attended the incident.

He confirmed that they did not have to perform an extraction as the person was mobile and being assessed by paramedics when they arrives.

All lanes are open.

Drivers are advised to take extra care as roads are slippery due to rain.

TUESDAY’S NEWS

Rescue road crash Little Mulgrave

Police, fire and emergency services and ambulance services responded to a single vehicle accident at the bottom of the Gilles Range at 6.45pm.

A vehicle rolled down an embankment and came to rest in a ditch near Little Mulgrave.

The driver, the only occupant, was able to exit the vehicle without entrapment and was treated at the scene by paramedics. Police did not report any serious injuries.

There has been no reported disruption to traffic.

Enter with intent Parramatta Park

City Beat Police officers arrested a 22-year-old Edge Hill man on Monday following investigations into a stealing offence at the weekend.

It will be alleged on June 20 officers approached the man on the Esplanade, but he ran from police hiding in a pool area of an Esplanade hotel.

As police approached, the man has jumped into the pool swimming away before climbing over a fence and fleeing.

Police gave chase and with the assistance of members of the public located the man hiding in a shopping plaza cupboard.

It will be further alleged at around 4.30am on June 18 the man broke into a Bunda Street business stealing money before leaving.

The 22-year-old man was charged with one count of enter and commit indictable offence and obstruct police. His bail was opposed, and he will appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today June 21.

Burglary

Three juveniles arrested following investigations into burglaries that occurred in Smithfield, Caravonica and Redlynch over the weekend. Police arrested a further three juveniles.

It will be alleged the group travelled to Smithfield in the early hours of June 19 breaking into a Charringa Link home, Stealing keys personal items and two cars.

The group then allegedly attempted to break into homes in Caravonica before gaining entry to an Orana Street Home.

It will be further alleged the group drove to Redlynch attempting to gain entry into a Springbrook Ave home.

Yesterday a 15-year-old Yarrabah boy was charged with three counts each of burglary and unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and one count each of attempted enter dwelling, receiving tainted property and attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Police opposed his bail and he will appear in the Cairns Childrens Court.

A 15-year-old Yarrabah girl was charged with two counts each of burglary, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and attempted enter dwelling and one count of stealing.

A 17-year-old Yarrabah girl was charged with two counts each of burglary, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and attempted enter dwelling and one count each of unlicensed driving and receiving tainted property.

The two girls were bailed with strict conditions and will appear in the Cairns Childrens Court.

A 15-year-old Yarrabah boy was previously charged with 11 offences in relation to this investigation.

Armed robbery charges

A 15-year-old Gordonvale boy has been charged following investigations into two recent alleged robberies of a bus driver.

It will be alleged the youth waved the bus down at approximately 7.30pm at Dempsey Street, Gordonvale on June 19. He boarded the bus and allegedly approached the driver armed with a knife demanding money.

The boy then allegedly reached over and grabbed the cash box fleeing from the scene. Police commenced an investigation however were unable to locate the offender.

The following day, June 20 at the exact same time and location, the youth allegedly waved down the bus again, boarded the bus and threatened the driver with a knife before fleeing with cash.

The boy was located by police on Burn Close at approximately 9.35pm yesterday.

Detectives charged the boy with two counts of armed robbery, and one count each of obstructing police, possession of a drug utensil and possession of dangerous drugs.

His bail was refused and he is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Children’s Court.

MONDAY’S NEWS

Police Assault

A 29-year-old woman from Edmonton has been charged for allegedly assaulting a female police officer on Sunday afternoon.

A Queensland Police spokesman said about 4pm a female police officer was conducting inquiries into a stolen phone when a woman allegedly threw an item which hit the officer on the corner of Shields and Lake Streets.

The officer sustained minor injuries while the woman was arrested and charged with assault police and contravene a police banning notice.

The 29-year-old woman was given bail from the watch house and is scheduled to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Burglary at Smithfield

A 15-year-old boy from Yarrabah has been charged with 11 offences after an alleged burglary at Smithfield.

A group allegedly forced entry into a Charringa Link home where keys, items and two cars were stolen from the driveway on Sunday morning

The group also allegedly broke into several other homes in Caravonica and gained entry into a Orana Street home where they stole jewellery and other items.

The group also allegedly drove to Redlynch and attempted to break into a Springbrook Ave home.

The boy was charged with two counts of burglary and attempted enter dwelling, three counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and one count each of enter dwelling, attempted enter premise, enter premise and commit indictable offence and wilful damage.

He was bailed under strict conditions and will appear in the Cairns Childrens Court.

School incident

Police and paramedics have been called to a brawl that sent a Cairns school into lockdown.

At 11.40am police attended Djarragun College after receiving calls for assistance to contain a disturbance on school grounds.

Police requested medical support after a student was knocked unconscious.

The student has been treated by Queensland Ambulance Service medics.

A police spokeswoman said no arrests had been made and could not provide information on whether all the young people involved were students at the school.

“Police have been called to disturbance that’s happened between young people near the school,” she said.

Police at the Gordonvale school have conducted patrols around the school grounds to make sure the area was safe ahead of the lockdown being lifted.

It’s understood tensions between rival groups escalated and turned violent.

The principal of Djarragun College has been contacted for comment.
