THE Far North is in for a turbulent week with forecasters predicting strong winds, showers and another dip in temperatures.

Senior forecaster at the Bureau of Meteorology Felim Hanniffy said there are changes coming for water patterns in Cairns and encouraged people to check daily alerts and forecasts.

“There is definitely change coming when you look into later this week and early next week,” he said.

“People should be checking daily the weather warnings and forecasts for this week.”

Mr Hanniffy is expecting a slight dip in temperatures from the middle of the week but not as significant as the chills the region experienced last week.

“Temperatures have picked up and now the wind is coming from that warmer Coral Sea so temps should be more average but we will see another southerly surge push through Queensland and reach the tropics in the middle of the week meaning a slight dip but we aren’t expecting temperatures to be a as cold as we saw last week,” he said.

Monday is forecast to be cloudy with a minimum of 19C and a top of 27C while Tuesday is expected to be sunny with a low of 18C and a maximum of 29C.

Conditions on Wednesday are set to be sunny, Thursday and Friday will be partly cloudy, but a shower or two is forecast for the weekend..

Saturday is expected to produce a 70 per cent chance for a showers in the area of up to 6mm.

“There looks like a good offshore flow developing which is likely to increase the shower activity across the coast,” he said.

Mr Hanniffy said there is the potential for strong wind warnings to be issued throughout the week as early as Wednesday.

“The strongest winds will roll across the state and bring that southerly airflow we will see the wind increase on the Cairns waters on Wednesday,” he said

“We could see some strong wind warnings over the Cairns waters on Wednesday.

It is highly likely that strong wind warnings will persist into the weekend all the way to the Cooktown peninsula waters.”
