Cairns weather: Flood warnings for Russell, Mulgrave, South Johnstone and Tully rivers after heavy rain

Heavy rain on the Cassowary Coast in the last 24 hours means flood warnings are still in place for several Far North rivers but there’s respite from the rain in sight. Forecast details >>

Flood warnings remain in place for several Cassowary Coast rivers with Tully Gorge receiving a further 107mm of rain since 9am on Monday.

Bureau of Meteorology community information officer Pat Clapp said there was 91mm at the Boulders but fairly light rain in Cairns with 34mm recorded.

He said the weather would clear over coming days.

“There will be widespread falls, but below 10mm,” Mr Clapp said.

He said the wet weather was due to south easterly winds and upper atmospheric conditions.

Far North towns have been inundated with rain, with reports of up to 300mm recorded overnight at Innisfail and flooding in several rivers, as wet weather sets in.

Minor flood warnings have been issued for the Russell and Mulgrave rivers, South Johnstone and Johnstone rivers and the Tully River, with forecasters predicting more rain ahead.

“On the coast, tides are actually starting to come down, so it’s not really a big issue.”

The spokesman said the heavy showers were “exceptional” for April, and wind and rain was forecast for ANZAC Day on Tuesday.

“It’s going to be windy and showery. Not as bad as the last 24 hours which was almost unprecedented,” the spokesman said.

“There will be uncomfortably gusty winds, especially for coastal (Anzac) services near the beach and everyone will have their umbrellas inside-out.”

He said temperatures would stay around 29 degrees most days with no heavy rains expected in Cairns.

“The most affected areas would be the Cassowary Coast and west of Innisfail,” he said.
