Cairns Regional Council launches buyback scheme to reclaim unused burial plots
Cairns Regional Council has launched a buyback program targeting nearly 400 unused burial plots reserved for over 25 years as cemetery land runs critically low.
Families risk losing burial plots held since 1941 unless they respond to a buyback offer as the Cairns cemetery runs critically low.
Cairns Regional Council has launched a six‑month Voluntary Plot Buyback Program to free up
unused burial plots from now until 31 May 2026.
The program targets plots nearly 400 plots with the oldest reservations dating back to 1941.
Council said it will contact people to confirm whether they still want their plot or will surrender it for a refund.
“Burial rights for plots where written consent is not received during this period will be revoked, and the plots will be made available for future use,” a council statement said.
“Council anticipates that enquiries may also come from Burial Right Holders with reservations at other cemeteries or for less than 25 years, whereby the same process will apply.”
Refunds of up to $450 will be offered for adult monumental or lawn section plots reserved for more than 25 years, and the usual $250 application fee will be waived.
Cairns Cemetery hosts about 150 burials a year.
Of the 1,212 reserved plots across the cemetery, close to 400 have been held for more than 25 years and remain unused.
Buying back plots that are no longer needed aim to help bring sites back into circulation quickly.
While work is underway to increase available land, supply is tightening.
Council will also accept enquiries from Burial Right Holders with reservations at other cemeteries or for less than 25 years; the same assessment process will apply.
Residents who wish to keep their site, surrender their plot, or ask questions about the program can contact Cairns Regional Council on 1300 69 22 47 or email cemeteriesbuyback@council.qld.gov.au.
