CAIRNS will soon shake free its reputation as a barren wasteland devoid of Krispy Kreme doughnuts with 7-Eleven unveiling a $15m-plus plan to gain market share.
The convenience store giant has more than 700 stores across Australia but none in Cairns, which has been a stronghold for NightOwl and other smaller operators for years.
That is all about to change with 7-Eleven planning open 15 stores in Townsville and Cairns before June next year.
It means the chain’s flagship snack, glazed Krispy Kreme doughnuts will also finally come to the Far North.

7-Eleven Australia spokesman Braeden Lord said more than 200 construction jobs would be created from the project, with more than 150 ongoing positions once stores were open.
“Recent investments in our supply chain have made it possible for us to bring our offer to Townsville and Cairns and we are incredibly excited about the chance to serve the local communities in Far North Queensland,” he said.
“In addition to the jobs created to build the stores, each site will employ up to 15 team members in a mix of full-time, part time and casual roles.
“There will be a number of leadership positions available, and we hope to have Townsville and Cairns locals join us as leaders.”
The company has called for locals interested in being recruited to contact pexstoreleader@7eleven.com.au for a “confidential discussion”.
“We are continuing to work with landlords and developers to identify opportunities to secure the right sites to meet the needs of the community,” Mr Lord said.
7-Eleven in Australia is 100 per cent Australian owned and operated.
The owners of the business bought the licence for the name when they opened their first store in Melbourne in 1977.
