DEMOLITION works have begun at Earlville Shopping Town to make way for two new fan favourite food outlets Guzman y Gomez and Oporto.
Scaffolding and fences have been seen around the proposed sites as builders begin to de-fit the buildings from the inside out.
Earlville centre manager Karen Stabile said while demolition had begun there were no dates for when it was expected to be finished.
“The buildings will be taken down from the inside out, they have to get in there and see what they are like infrastructure wise and it was quite a complex so it won’t be demolished with a ball, it will be much more strategic,” she said.
Banking giants ANZ and NAB have since been relocated to inside the shopping centre as the two banks were originally located inside the buildings that are being demolished to make way for the new food establishments.
CBRE Retail Property Leasing agent Lewis Torkington said the planning stage for the new outlets was still ongoing.
“They are still in a planning stage with no official dates for anything as of yet,” he said.
This will be the second Oporto franchise in the city with the Australian chain’s only other Far North site located inside the Cairns Airport.
Oporto is a Portuguese style food outlet that currently operates over 100 stores across Australia and New Zealand which started in 1986.
Right next door is expected to be house a Mexican lovers’ paradise with the first Guzman y Gomez opening in the region.
Currently the closest Guzman y Gomez to Cairns is based in Townsville, more than four hours away.
There are 15 different food and beverages outlets located inside the Earlville shopping centre including global chains such as Subway, McDonalds and Wendy’s.
