PARKING fees are about to increase again as Cairns Regional Council turns up the pressure on glove box coin stashes.
Hourly price hikes have become an annual event across the city after a decision was made in 2017 to turn the screws on the council’s big revenue raiser.
Back then, CBD parking spots were just $1.20 an hour.
Subsequent 20c-a-year increases have been implemented with a council spokesman saying the hourly bill would hit $2 from Tuesday, January 4.
“Centre median parking across the CBD remains free, but time limited,” he said.
“Parking is also free after 2pm on Saturday and all-day Sunday, with the exception of the Southern Esplanade car park (Lagoon car park).
“Residents are reminded parking is always free on all public holidays.”
Amazingly, the 2017 decision was given the green light without any formal opposition from the general public.
The plan was advertised extensively in both print media and on the council’s website, but no public submissions were received.
The decision also triggered an increase to parking fines.
In 2017, overstaying in a parking space would set drivers back $50 – a figure that has since jumped to $63.
