A HAIRDRESSER who loves making her clients cry has been voted the best stylist in the region.

Amie Simm, who manages Hair Boutique Co at Smithfield, said her greatest reward was seeing her clients’ reactions – whether it was a smile or a few happy tears.

“The nicest feeling is when someone cries after you have finished,” Ms Simm said.

Ms Simm was voted the region’s best hairdresser by Cairns Post readers, after being short-listed as a finalist from a massive pool of nominations.

The veteran hairdresser has been working her magic on her clients’ crowning glories for 14 years and has travelled worldwide from the United Kingdom to the United States, where she worked at the prestigious Los Angeles Fashion Week three years ago.

Along the way, she has found her connection with people has been the most fulfilling aspect of the job.

“I like to chat to my clients. My clients are my friends. We are like one big family,” she said.

Educating clients on how to properly care for their locks is one of her passions and her advice to people was to “look after your hair like you would your nicest outfit.”

“It is the only accessory that you wear every day.” she said.

She also strongly encourages her customers to care for their hair with quality shampoo, conditioner and treatments.

“If they want quality hair, they have to use salon quality products,” she said.

Ms Simm has also grown incredibly close with her teammates at the salon.

“I love my team, since coming to Cairns, I have loved the salon. My boss is now my best friend,” she said.

Salon owner Laura Dicken said Ms Simm had been a great asset to the team.

“She really cares, and she puts everything into it,” Ms Dicken said.

“She is a very pedantic and driven person (and) very educated and knowledgeable,” Ms Dicken said.

Ms Dicken said Ms Simm had been invaluable when it came to educating people on colour and how to properly protect their hair.

Ms Simm educates herself twice a year to keep up to date with the new colour trends and knowledge.

She is well known for her colour work and completed a colour degree while working overseas in the United Kingdom.

“Having worked at different salons in different countries, I have been able to learn and gain a

different knowledge on colouring, and look at different aspects to it,” said Ms Simm said.

The salon staff hope to help grow the hair industry’s culture in the Far North and have plans to bring a range of guest artists and hair stylists to the region in the future.
