A CAIRNS childcare centre has credited the connection between staff, families and their kids for a brilliant rating from a government agency, making it among the top centres in Queensland.
The C and K Edmonton Community Kindergarten was rated as “exceeding” national quality standards in the report by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority.
The body assesses childcare centres on seven criteria – education, health and safety, physical environment, staffing, relationships with children, partnerships with families and communities, and governance and leadership.

The categories are marked as either “significant improvement required”, “working towards national quality standards (NQS)”, “meeting NQS”, “exceeding NQS” or “excellent”. Each centre is graded an overall rating.
The Edmonton centre’s co-director, Carol Browning, said achieving excellence was just reward for teamwork and “a full time effort”.
“I think it’s the interaction of the children and staff, and the children and their families that makes the centre a successful one,” she said.
“The parents are the ones who are holding their trust with us and they are very involved.”
Ms Browning said improvements in online communication tools such as Story Park allowed parents to connect with their kids about their activities at childcare when they home.
“Mum and dad can talk to their child about what they have been up to and the progress of their learning throughout the year,” she said.
“It’s one of many communication tools we use, but the connection between the staff and the kids is important.
“We’re really happy with our rating.”
According to the ratings, 10 Far North childcare centres have an overall rating of “exceeding NQS”.
They include: Weipa Community Kindergarten and Preschool, Trinity Beach Community Kindergarten, Mareeba Community Kindergarten, Innisfail Community Preschool and Kindergarten, Holloways Beach Community Kindergarten, the Goodstart Early Learning centres at Innisfail and Cairns, and the First Steps Early Childhood Learning Centre.
