A NEW exhibition by one of the Far North’s most experienced artists which aims to capture the “fast-disappearing” character of Cairns and its surrounds launches at the Brother Jenkins cafe on Thursday night.

Edmonton’s Julie Haysom is a multi-award winning artist, illustrator and educator with a career spanning more than 40 years.

Her works are held in galleries both locally and internationally including in the Australian National Museum in Canberra.

Additionally, she received both state and national awards for her work on the Queensland Government educational resource “Safety for Piccaninny” and illustrated the children’s book Moli Det Bigi Bigi (Molly The Pig) through the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, which was included in both the Book Week and Australian Reading Hour campaign.

Ms Haysom, who is the granddaughter of one of Queensland’s most celebrated fine artists, Melville Haysom, says the exhibition is especially sweet as it comes just months after the launch of a new book on the life of her grandfather and his wife Yvonne, Merri Merri – Home Of The Twin Arts by Pat Dryden.

“Melville was from Brisbane but he spent time in the Far North painting our beautiful scenery,” she said.

“I felt compelled to try to capture a fast-disappearing character of Cairns, so I enjoyed painting its old houses surrounded by lush tropical plants.

“A couple of paintings are of houses within the vicinity of Brother Jenkins at Manunda.

“I like the collision of old and new, which gave me the title of the exhibition, Now and Then.”

Julie Haysom’s Now and Then launches at Brother Jenkins, 177 Martyn St, Manunda at 6pm on Thursday, June 16 and runs until July 13. Music from gypsy swing band Blue Reed plus a cash bar, quesadillas, bar food and snacks. Merri Merri: Home Of The Twin Arts is available from patdryden.com
