Cairns Airport passenger numbers high ahead of school holidays

The number of passengers travelling is expected to hit a high these school holidays. The Cairns Airport boss has revealed these two major tips that will make travelling easier.

Airport numbers are expected to hit a high these school holidays amid warnings from officials to get there early if you are catching a flight.

Cairns Airport chief executive Richard Barker said 288,000 arriving and departing passengers are expected through Cairns Airport during school holidays until October 7.

“We are expecting some of our busiest days this year over the upcoming school holidays,” he said.

Demand is strong, with aircraft loads sitting at more than 90 per cent on major routes.

“The domestic markets of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane continue to perform strongly.”

While school holidays are only just starting the airport has already been busy.

“Last week, Cairns experienced its best week since mid-July, a 10 per cent increase when compared to the same week of 2019,” he said.

“This momentum bodes well ahead of the upcoming holiday period.”

Mr Barker said during this period it was important to take a few things into account.

“It is a good idea to get to the airport a little earlier than usual as more passengers are processed during this busy period,” he said.

“Our region, like many others, continues to experience a shortage of taxi and rideshare drivers, so there may be longer than usual wait times for these services during peak periods. “We are encouraging passengers flying out of Cairns and into the region to pre-book their transport in advance, where possible.”

For those not travelling, there is plenty to do in the region.

Smithfield Shopping Centre is putting together a cerealously fun activity for kids where kids can put together breakfast options.

“We’re expecting a very busy couple of weeks this school holidays where families can look forward to creating some fun breakfast options,” Smithfield Centre manager John Cooper said.

“Kids will get to mix and match from a range of eight different types of cereals and select different mix-ins, with gluten-free options available.

“Kids can then design their own cereal box and take home their personalised creation.”

Cairns Central has put together a fun deal.

“This school holidays we’re creating the ultimate day out with an exclusive value deal to keep the little and big kids entertained,” Cairns Central centre manager Christie-Lee Jackson.

“Our Food and Fun Pass includes a movie at Event Cinemas, Baskin Robbins ice-cream for the kids, 30 minutes of fun at Iplay, plus free all-day parking.”
