AS DOMESTIC travel reopens, Cairns can expect to see an influx of holiday-makers, with recent survey data naming Queensland the top tourist destination as voted by neighbouring states.
In a major tourism survey undertaken by Compare the Market, Cairns has landed in 7th place to tie with Brisbane in the top 10 road trip destinations for Aussies, a good sign of big resurgence for local businesses.
At the Australian Armour and Artillery Museum, Victorian Danny Hadjiantonakis and his family have been making the most of their time in the Far North and are “not looking forward to going home”.
“We’ve been out on the reef, went fishing, drove through the Tablelands to the waterfalls, and been to the Cairns Aquarium, everything you’d want to do in the better weather,” Mr Hadjiantonakis said.
“We’re flying home on Monday, but we wish we could stay for another week, we’re going home to our extended family in Victoria who have all tested positive for Covid.”
