AN iconic not-for profit sporting group has announced plans to expand their club creating 150 local jobs in the process.
Brother Leagues Club Cairns are expected to include a brand-new cafe, a new dedicated sports bar and Lanterns Buffet Restaurant will also be refurbished.
The development was approved by Cairns Regional Council on Friday (October 15).
Group General Manager Shane Fitzgerald said their redevelopment should provide a local boost to the economy.
“This redevelopment will be a further boost for our economy, while at the same time providing world class social facilities four our 30,000 members to enjoy,” he said.
The development was designed by Rubicon and will use local subcontractors.
“This was a key part of our brief to Rubicon and we expect this will be equivalent to 150 full-time jobs during construction, with a further 30 ongoing jobs created directly with Brothers once the project is complete,” he said.
“Since 2019, Brothers Leagues Club has contributed more than $5m in support to local sport and the community.”
The works will include a new cafe that will be situated along the expanded Anderson Street and English Street corner.
The cafe will be called Fratelli’s (brother in Italian) and is expected to offer a modern dining experience with Mediterranean-inspired food including pizzas and all-day grazing.
There will also be a new sports bar which will have a big-screen video wall for racing and live sports and seating for punters who can use the state-of-the-art TAB facilities.
Improvements include a new lounge area surrounding the existing Shamrock Bar.
These upgrades are expected to start in October and run until mid-2022.
Some upgrades have already begun including improvements on the club’s second level. The Dreams function room is expected to become a modern function facility to cater for all events.
“This space is currently undergoing a complete transformation, with relocation of our amenities to create a brilliant new open function space featuring floor to ceiling windows,” Mr Fitzgerald said.
These added improvements are expected to be completed by Christmas.
