Brisbane defence barrister Gregory McGuire will represent Rajwinder Singh, 40, in Cairns, when he faces trial for the alleged murder of Toyah Cordingley, 24, at Wangetti Beach in 2018.
Mr Singh’s trial has been scheduled to begin on November 10 this year before Justice Lincoln Crowley in the Cairns Supreme Court.
The case was mentioned in court yesterday to confirm Mr Singh’s legal team had been able to brief counsel to represent Mr Singh in the trial, which is expected to take several weeks.
Defence lawyer Nick Dore, appearing via video link, confirmed Mr McGuire had been briefed and was “ready to go”.
Mr Singh was not required to appear in court in person.
The body of health store worker Toyah Cordingley, 24, was found at Wangetti Beach buried in a sand dune in October 2018.
Ms Cordingley had visited the beach north of Cairns to walk her dog, Indie, the day before her body was uncovered.
Indie was found tied to a tree nearby.
Former Innisfail nurse Rajwinder Singh was arrested and charged with murder in 2022.
Mr McGuire is described on his chamber’s profile as “one of the most experienced trial advocates at the Queensland Bar, having appeared in hundreds of trials since being admitted in 1986”.
